Plique a'jour is a type of Cloisonne which resembles stained glass. This art form was developed in the 14th century in the Byzantine Empire. Delicate wires divide the intricate design which is formed with transparent enamel in various colors. Typically metal work is first fitted with a temporary backing before the enamel is applied and fired. After the firing processes are completed, the enamel is gently polished allowing a soft glow when light shines on the object.
